A serious incident occurred in the city of Gebze in the Kocaeli province, Turkey, where a seven-story building collapsed this morning, leaving behind victims and injured people.
Turkish authorities have announced that the bodies of two children have been pulled from the rubble. According to Turkish media, the collapse occurred at around 07:30 in the morning on Isikgel Street, in the Mevlana Mahallesi area.
At the time of the incident, a family of five was inside the building, which was trapped under the rubble: the parents, aged 44 and 37, and their three children, aged 12, 14 and 18.
The first two bodies recovered are those of children, while the search for the others continues with high intensity.
Immediately after the collapse, numerous police forces, firefighters, and AFAD (Civil Protection Agency) teams arrived at the scene, working to find survivors.
147 rescuers were involved in the operation, including 80 AFAD personnel, as well as volunteers and municipality teams.
The Kocaeli Prefecture has issued an official statement, expressing condolences for the victims and wishes for a speedy recovery for the injured, while promising assistance to the affected families. The causes of the building collapse are still unknown, while investigations are ongoing.
