Zohran Mamdani's victory in New York will benefit Donald Trump and his MAGA movement, but it is also an indication that Serbia and the Serbian diaspora should learn from Hindus, say Danas' interlocutors, who interpret Mamdani's victory as a message to young politicians in Serbia.
Nebojsa Lazarevic, founder of the Center for European Policy, tells Danas that the new mayor of New York, Mamdani, is not Donald Trump's worst nightmare, as interpreted by some parts of the public.
"The story that he is 'Trump's worst nightmare' is ridiculous, because Trump, it seems to me, played with Mandan's victory."
"This is actually the best news of all for Trump, as Mamdani's victory actually turns the Democratic Party from within back to the left and to the far left, instead of what is most dangerous for Trump, which is the Democratic Party's rapprochement with the center-left," he emphasizes.
Lazarevic says that the main game now is about the results of the mid-term elections.
Midterm elections in the United States are held in the middle of a presidential term and are held every four years, two years after the presidential election. They elect all members of the House of Representatives and one-third of the Senate, as well as many governors and local officials.
"Trump has a majority in both houses of Congress, so it turns out that in some critical and crisis situations he does not have a majority in the Senate. Which means that it is very important for him to succeed in the 2026 midterm elections. And now how this will affect remains to be seen. But of course for the 2028 elections, this is good news, above all for the MAGA movement," says Lazarevic.
"Serbs should learn from Hindus": What does Zohran Mamdani's victory in New York show? 3
Stefan Simic, an advisor to the Belgrade City Assembly of the Movement of Free Citizens, says Mamdan's victory is confirmation and inspiration "for all of us who want to improve the daily lives of ordinary citizens".
“A politician traveling by bus was spotted posing for a campaign photo, and Mamdani showed that there are those for whom this is a way of life, and that people appreciate it when someone explains in simple terms what they live every day. That not everything a politician says has to be negative and complicated, but with positive energy and a straightforward approach, you can win elections,” he says.
Simić also says that it is particularly significant that Mamdani's victory came in the battle through the institutions of the system, at a time when, as he estimates, it is much more popular to engage in anti-politics.
"What I will certainly implement even more in my performance is the use of social networks, because they are no longer new communication channels, but the main and fundamental channels of communication. I hope that Belgrade will follow the paths of New York and have a new mayor," says the PSG advisor.
Miroslav Parovic, the chairman of the extra-parliamentary People's Freedom Movement, says this is the victory of the ultra-liberal candidate of the Democrats and believes it shows that this party will go to the extreme.
"Such a situation favors Trump and his MAGA movement, and it even seems to me that they themselves pushed Mamdani a little towards victory. So, it is almost certain that Vance or another candidate from the conservative Republican environment will be the next president of America," says Parovic.
Zarko Ristic, an independent MP, notes that Zohran Mamdani is not a new face in politics and that he is an early member of the Democratic Party. Now, as the newly elected mayor of New York, he has started making harsh statements against the Trump administration, Ristic notes.
"It's an indicator of the democracy of American society, that's how I see it," he underlines. Ristic is mainly interested in the past of the new mayor of New York.
"Mamdani is another in a series of senior US administration officials who are Hindu by mother. Just a few years ago we had the mayor of London of Indian origin, Sadiq Khan, and today we have the mayor of New York."
"Both are Muslims. The British Prime Minister until recently was Hindu, Rishi Sunak. In the US, the wife of Vice President JD Vance is also Hindu. Kamala Harris' mother is also Hindu," he says.
This MP emphasizes that all of this is an indication that a nation's diaspora can contribute greatly to the position of its home country.
"Hindus all over the world help their country, in various formal and informal ways. Our Serbian diaspora is not even able to help its homeland, if it is not first allowed by the 'system'. We should learn from Hindus," says Ristic. /Adapted from Danas/
