NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte has sent a strong message to young Russian soldiers heading to the war front in Ukraine, warning them and their families not to fall prey to what he described as deception by Russian authorities.
During a joint press conference in Kiev with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, Rutte stated that young people who sign up to fight are being sent to the front lines without the necessary preparation and with insufficient equipment to face Ukrainian forces.
"You are being deceived. Men like you who sign up to fight will not be trained. The equipment they will give you will be weak," Rutte said.
The NATO chief warned that the risk to Russian soldiers on the front remains very high, stressing that many of them could lose their lives or be seriously injured.
"There is a very high probability that you will die or be injured while you are there and, if you are injured, you may be left to suffer in the mud and die ," he declared.
Rutte added that these developments show that Russia is facing difficulties in continuing the war, describing Moscow as "increasingly desperate."
His statements come at a time when fighting in Ukraine continues with intensity, while both sides are trying to strengthen their military capabilities on the ground.
