Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa has launched an unprecedented campaign against corruption, starting with his own family.
According to Reuters, Sharaa has ordered the closure of the office of his older brother, Jamal, and has asked civil servants who own luxury cars to hand over the keys or face investigation for unjustified wealth.
At a meeting held on August 30 at his former base in Idlib, the president mocked attendees who arrived in luxury cars: "I didn't realize that state salaries are so high!" he said, according to sources.
Sharaa then gathered his family, including his 79-year-old father, warning them not to use the family name for personal gain.
The Syrian Ministry of Information confirmed the closure of Jamal al-Sharaa's office, stressing that "it has no official function and is not allowed to carry out commercial activities."
