Peter Magyar promised that Hungary will be a reliable partner in the EU, while German Chancellor Friedrich Merz called for more cooperation for Ukraine.
Hungary's new Prime Minister, Peter Magyar, declared today in Berlin that he intends to restore his country as a reliable and constructive partner within the European Union.
During his first official meeting with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, the German leader pledged full support for Budapest's efforts to return, as he put it, "to the heart of Europe."
Merz called Magyar's election victory over Viktor Orbán "an inspiration for all of Europe" and "a clear message against populism worldwide."
The German Chancellor stressed that she wants to help "Hungary's new beginning be successful," but at the same time urged the new Hungarian government to support the EU's common policy towards Ukraine, while following a different course from that of its predecessor.
For his part, Peter Magyar pledged that Hungary will be an "honest and reliable partner" within the European Union.
" Of course we will not always agree on every issue, but we will not veto it solely for reasons of principle ," he declared.
However, Magyar clarified that Hungary will continue to oppose sending weapons or troops to Ukraine. He also added that Budapest will block the opening of Ukraine's EU membership negotiations as long as, in his view, the rights of the Hungarian minority in Ukraine remain restricted.
" I expect that an agreement will be reached on this issue soon. We are ready to open a new page in Hungarian-Ukrainian relations ," the Hungarian prime minister said.
Merz responded that bilateral issues should be resolved, but should not hinder Ukraine's European integration process.
Attack on the President of Hungary
During his visit to Berlin, Magyar harshly criticized Hungarian President Tamás Sulyok, calling him "Viktor Orbán's puppet."
According to the prime minister, the president has not fulfilled his constitutional obligations over the last two years.
" He stood passively while Orbán was selling out our homeland and turning Hungary into the most corrupt state in the European Union ," Magyar declared.
The Hungarian Prime Minister also warned that he intends to remove officials close to Orbán from key positions as soon as possible, taking advantage of the strong support he has received after his election victory.
He even demanded that President Sulyok leave office by May 31, warning that otherwise constitutional changes could be made to remove him.
