Iran is planning a three-day funeral ceremony for Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, who was reportedly killed during Israeli-American attacks on the first day of the war, on February 28.
The funeral will be organized at state expense and with high official honors for the leader who led the Islamic Republic for nearly 37 years.
Khamenei died at the age of 86 during the bombing of his residence in central Tehran.
The funeral ceremony was originally scheduled for March 4, but was postponed due to developments in the war. Iranian authorities have not yet announced an exact date, but according to an official, it is expected to take place near the month of Muharram, the first month of the Islamic calendar, which coincides with mid-June.
According to the same sources, ceremonies will be held in Tehran, as well as in the holy cities of Qom and Mashhad, Khamenei's birthplace, where he is expected to be buried.
In the Iranian capital, the funeral ceremony will last at least 24 hours and organizers expect 15 to 20 million people to attend.
Following Ali Khamenei's death, his son, Mojtaba Khamenei, took over the country in early March. However, he has not appeared publicly since then, reportedly injured in an attack, and communicates only through written statements.
