Two people were killed and six others were injured, three of them seriously, after a shooting in the Moulins neighborhood of the city of Nice, southern France, on Tuesday, the prefect of Alpes-Maritimes, Laurent Hottiaux, confirmed.
According to French authorities, the shooting took place near Amaryllis Square, and a large police operation is underway in the area to identify and arrest the perpetrators.
"All police services have been mobilized to find the perpetrators, who are currently on the run, and to bring them to justice as soon as possible ," declared Prefect Hottiaux on the X platform.
He urged residents to avoid the area and not to hinder security operations.
The mayor of Nice, Éric Ciotti, reacted by calling the event "another terrible exchange of fire," while asking for more support from the French state in the fight against drug trafficking.
"The fight against drug trafficking cannot end with a defeat for the Republic. Nice expects an adequate response, especially in terms of police personnel, which the city has lacked for years," he wrote on social media.
The incident comes at a time of high tensions in Nice, where several incidents involving firearms have been recorded in recent days, linked according to authorities to clashes between drug trafficking groups.
Just a day earlier, the prefect of Alpes-Maritimes had announced the request for significant police reinforcements in the most problematic areas of the city, with the aim of restoring security.
The Moulins neighborhood has been plagued by violent incidents. In October last year, gunmen opened fire from a vehicle in a square in the area, killing two people who, according to investigations, were not linked to drug trafficking.
Also, in July 2024, seven members of the same family, including three children and a teenager, lost their lives in an arson attack targeting an apartment linked to drug trafficking.
