Former German Chancellor Angela Merkel has given a grim forecast for the war in Ukraine. She said she hopes the war in Ukraine will end within the next decade, stressing that the goal should be to preserve Ukraine's sovereignty and independence.
" In 10 years, I hope that the war in Ukraine will be over and Ukraine will be an independent, free and sovereign state ," Merkel said during the "WDR 0630" podcast in Berlin.
Her statement comes at a time when the possibility of restoring compulsory military service for the Bundeswehr is increasingly being discussed in Germany, due to the perceived threat from Russia.
Merkel argued that such a decision would no longer be necessary after the end of the war in Ukraine.
The former chancellor's comments come as debates continue in Europe about how to reach a diplomatic solution to the conflict. According to previous reports, several names have been discussed in European circles who could play a mediating role in possible negotiations with Russia, including Angela Merkel, Finnish President Alexander Stubb and former Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi.
However, Merkel has rejected the opportunity to mediate talks between Russia and the European Union. She has stated that responsibility for negotiations should remain with the current heads of state and government.
Experts, meanwhile, continue to analyze the prospects for ending the war, while attention also remains on the Kremlin's plans to mobilize hundreds of thousands of new troops.
