Fugitive under false identity, brother of notorious drug lord arrested

Colombian authorities have arrested Javier Macias, the brother of notorious Ecuadorian drug trafficker Adolfo "Fito" Macias, who was wanted by justice for a series of serious charges, including murder and money laundering.

The news was confirmed by Colombia's Interior Minister, John Reberg. "Xavi," as Javier Macias is otherwise known, was arrested on Tuesday during a coordinated operation between Colombian and Ecuadorian authorities.

According to Reberg, the arrested man was living in Colombian territory using a false identity, and an Interpol red notice had previously been issued against him. Authorities have not released any further details regarding his whereabouts or the manner of his arrest.

Macias' arrest comes at a time when international attention remains focused on the criminal network linked to the Los Choneros gang. The organization has been led for years by his brother, Adolfo "Fito" Macias, considered one of the most powerful figures in organized crime in Ecuador.

"Fito" became known worldwide after his spectacular escape from an Ecuadorian prison in 2024. After his recapture, he was extradited to the United States in July 2025, becoming the first person extradited from Ecuador to the US following the referendum promoted by President Daniel Noboa as part of the fight against organized crime.

He is currently facing federal charges in New York, including drug and weapons trafficking. If convicted, he could face 20 years to life in prison.

According to US authorities, the Los Choneros gang has had close ties to the Mexican Sinaloa cartel and has been classified by the US as a terrorist organization.
