One of the most prominent talents of this World Cup is Jan Diomand, the striker of the Ivory Coast and the German club Leipzig. The young footballer has long been considered one of the most promising names in European football, while the leaders of the German club have placed a value on his card of around 100 million euros.
However, behind his success on the field lies a painful personal story, which Diomand shared in an interview with The Players' Tribune. He revealed that he dedicates every achievement and performance to his late sister, Roxanne, who tragically lost her life at the age of 15.
In his emotional account, the striker recalls the unconditional support his sister gave him since childhood.
" Everything I do, I do for you. Remember when someone gave me a fake Manchester United shirt and I wrote 'Ronaldo 7' in ink? You were the one who always believed I could be the next Cristiano Ronaldo, while everyone else laughed ," Diomand writes.
He also remembers the moment when, after his debut with Leganes against Real Madrid, he swapped jerseys with Kylian Mbappe.
" You always told me: 'Yes, Mbappe is good, but my brother is better ,'" the footballer recounts.
But shortly after that match, his family's life changed forever. According to Diomand, his sister died after someone allegedly spiked her drink at a party.
" Someone put something in her drink at a party and she never woke up. She ran away. She was only 15 and I never got an answer ," he writes.
The footballer admits that since that day he has lived with constant pain, while he considers the football field the only place where he can find peace.
" Since you died, I don't feel anything. Only on the field do I feel calm and can I talk to you. Everything I do on the field, I do for you. The only thing I can do is use this pain to work harder and make all the dreams we had together come true. I will make sure the whole world knows your name ," Diomand concludes in his touching story.
