NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte said that no one would dare to attack any NATO member country.
"If this country were under attack, there would be 31 other countries that would come to Romania's aid. That's how NATO works," Rutte said at a joint press conference with Romanian President Nicusor Dan in Bucharest.
"And I think that makes us invincible, absolutely invincible. And that's exactly why I believe that no one will ever try ," he added.
Rutte said Romania has been a steadfast ally, providing leadership in the strategically vital Black Sea region. He praised Romania, Bulgaria and Turkey for their joint efforts to expand mine clearance and patrol operations in the area.
He said NATO's vigilance remains high amid repeated incursions of Russian drones into Romanian airspace.
"NATO takes these incidents extremely seriously and we will remain vigilant. Prevention is the foundation of our defense and so we are making it very clear that NATO is ready, willing and able to do whatever it takes to defend itself," Rutte stressed.
Referring to Washington's recent decision to reduce the presence of troops in several eastern flank countries, including Romania, Rutte downplayed concerns, saying such adjustments are routine.
"The United States has a large presence in Europe and that presence is there. These things happen. Please don't give this too much importance," he said.
Rutte also highlighted the growing cooperation between NATO and the EU on counter-drone technologies, describing their efforts as "a powerful combination."
According to him, the country will continue to invest in defense and remains committed to strengthening NATO's eastern flank.
Bucharest is hosting the NATO Industry Forum 2025 on November 5-6, bringing together alliance leaders and defense industry representatives to discuss increasing defense production, innovation, and cooperation.
