Iran's ambassador to Mexico, Abolfazl Pasandideh, said that the Iranian national team's participation in the World Cup in the United States should be seen as a sign of goodwill from Tehran, at a time when talks are underway to end the conflict.
In an interview with Politico, he emphasized that the presence of the Iranian team on American soil during wartime conveys a clear message in favor of peace.
"The fact that we are present in the US in a time of war sends a signal: we are in favor of peace," Pasandideh said.
He added that Iran has no problems with the American people and that sports can serve as a bridge to reduce tensions between the countries.
The ambassador also criticized the fact that some members of the Iranian national team's technical staff have not received visas to enter the US, warning that this could affect the team's performance during the tournament.
Addressing President Donald Trump, Pasandideh called for respect for the Iranian nation and said relations between the two countries could improve significantly.
"If the US turns a blind eye to Israel's interests, Iran and the US can be very good friends," he declared.
According to the ambassador, the World Cup could offer an opportunity to promote peace and end the conflict, if the parties manage to correctly read the signals being sent.
