A series of mysterious deaths has rocked a prominent German shipping family after two people were found murdered within less than 24 hours at a luxury property in Limpopo province, northern South Africa.
According to German newspaper Bild, authorities found Caroline von Rantzau, 26, heiress to the family that controls German shipping company Deutsche Afrika-Linien (DAL), dead. She was found shot in her room at the Leeuwfontein estate.
Police are investigating the circumstances of the incident and suspect that the young woman was shot with a shotgun, the same type of weapon that was in the gun collection of her father, Dr. Eberhart von Rantzau.
Just hours before her death, Arno Coen, 44, the family compound's financial director, was also found dead at the same property. He was reportedly shot to death on May 31 with a 9mm handgun. Coen was considered a trusted family associate and played a key role in the financial management and bookings of the property.
So far, police have not released any further details about the investigation. No arrests have been reported in connection with either murder, while authorities await autopsy results.
Caroline von Rantzau had recently started building her real estate investment portfolio and had purchased two properties near the border with Mozambique.
She spent a large part of her time caring for the wild animals living on the family property, which includes various species of antelope, horses, wildebeest, impala, mongoose, snakes, and birds.
Deutsche Afrika-Linien, headquartered in Hamburg, is one of the well-known companies in the chemical tanker sector in Europe. In 2022, the company sold its container shipping business to Hapag-Lloyd.
Dr. Eberhart von Rantzau represents the third generation of the family that owns the company, which was founded in 1924 by John T. Essberger.
