Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has launched a harsh and personal attack on German Chancellor Friedrich Merz.
In a post on the X platform, he referred to a post by the Chancellor and accused him of "political naivety" and "disgusting character."
Merz had written that Germany wanted to cooperate with the Gulf States "to promote peace in the region." However, "developments in Iran" were getting in the way.
Germany was prepared to further increase pressure and "start talks to quickly end the Iranian nuclear program."
Iran's foreign minister wrote that Germany, once "the engine of progress in Europe," has become "an engine of regression" under Merz.
"We hope that Germany will once again have more mature and honest political leadership," he said.
According to a report in the newspaper Bild, Merz reacted coldly to the words of the Iranian foreign minister during his visit to Qatar.
"This is undoubtedly an expression of great nervousness and uncertainty," Merz said.
The German Chancellor has called on the Iranian leadership to enter negotiations and demanded an end to its aggression and nuclear program.
During his visit to Doha, he warned against a military escalation between the US and Iran.
"The concern about a military escalation in the region is great," Merz said in the Qatari capital, according to Reuters news agency.
The Iranian airstrikes of June 2025 are still very much present in the region.
"I would also like to reiterate my call on the Iranian leadership to now truly enter into talks, end its aggression and end its nuclear program, as internationally agreed," the Chancellor added.
