The Kremlin has broken its silence on allegations from the US and Europe that the pedophile financier was an agent of Russian intelligence (KGB).
Moscow says it does not want to waste time answering questions about unproven suggestions in Western media and by Poland's prime minister that convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, who committed suicide in prison in 2019, may have been some kind of Russian intelligence agent.
Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said on Tuesday that Warsaw would launch an investigation into what he described as possible links between Epstein and Russian intelligence services, as well as any possible influence in Poland.
Tusk did not provide evidence for his claims, although Western media have raised questions in recent days about whether or not Epstein was a Russian agent collecting compromising material on the rich and powerful.
Asked by Reuters about Tusk's comments and Western media reports, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said "I would like to joke about such versions, but let's not waste time."
Russian officials say claims of a connection between Epstein and Russian intelligence are clearly being pushed into the public sphere to distract from a scandal that, they say, has exposed the hypocrisy of powerful men in the US and Europe.
In the files on Epstein released by the US Department of Justice, Russia is mentioned thousands of times.
They also show that some of the young women Epstein had contact with were from Russia, including a 26-year-old woman he sought to introduce to Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, the younger brother of Britain's King Charles.
Various media organizations and bloggers have also speculated that Epstein may have spied for Israel's foreign intelligence service, Mossad, or for the US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA).
