UN Secretary-General António Guterres has raised the alarm over a deep global crisis, warning that the international order and the United Nations itself are facing the most serious danger since their creation.
In an interview with La Repubblica, during his visit to Italy for the opening of the Olympic Games, Guterres stated that the world is entering a dangerous phase where "the law of force is replacing the force of law", a reality that, according to him, produces serious and destabilizing consequences.
He stressed that continued violations of international law, unilateral actions, and the weakening of multilateralism are eroding trust between states and increasing the risk of global conflicts.
According to Guterres, when great powers place interest and influence over rules, the message is clear: international norms can be ignored without consequences.
But the crisis is not just political. The UN chief also warned of a real financial risk, admitting that the Organization is on the verge of a "financial collapse" due to non-payment of dues by some member states.
"This situation exposes the UN to serious structural risks. Member States must either agree to financial reforms, or openly acknowledge the possibility of the Organization's financial collapse," Guterres said.
Regarding current conflicts, he reaffirmed that responsibility for international peace and security lies exclusively with the UN Security Council and that no parallel initiative can replace it.
Referring to Gaza, Guterres called for full implementation of Security Council resolution 2803, emphasizing that the ceasefire must be maintained and the process move towards Phase 2. This, according to him, means the full withdrawal of Israeli forces, the dismantling of armed groups, and the creation of conditions for a sustainable political solution, including the two-state model.
"Only the Security Council has the authority granted by the UN Charter to make binding decisions and authorize the use of force. No other mechanism can replace it. Therefore, its reform and strengthening are vital," Guterres concluded.
