German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has called for the start of negotiations to end the war in Ukraine as soon as possible, stressing that the priority should be to stop the bloodshed.
Speaking at the conference on the reconstruction of Ukraine, held in Gdańsk, Merz stated that it is time to open a diplomatic process that would enable the freezing of the front line and the creation of conditions for a peace agreement.
"The time has come to stop the killings," said the German Chancellor.
He also stressed that Germany remains steadfast in its support for Ukraine and that Berlin will continue to stand by Kiev in the face of Russian aggression.
Merz added that Europe, together with transatlantic allies, is ready to increase economic pressure on Russia, emphasizing that Moscow will not achieve its objective through war.
The Chancellor's statements come at a time when previous diplomatic efforts have failed to produce concrete results. For this reason, major European countries are considering ways to revive the negotiation process and play a more active role in reaching a solution.
Meanwhile, Russia continues to maintain the same stance, rejecting negotiations with European countries and insisting on its demands, which include significant territorial concessions from Ukraine.
