At least 164 people have died and 971 others have been injured after two earthquakes struck Venezuela, the country's acting president, Delcy Rodríguez, announced in the early hours of Thursday.
Authorities said the death toll was expected to rise as many buildings collapsed or suffered severe damage and search and rescue operations were ongoing. Rodríguez said at least 30 aftershocks had been recorded since the two main earthquakes.
In an interview with Venezuela's state broadcaster, Rodríguez said the government is cooperating with the United Nations to send rescue teams. She added that talks are also underway with the International Monetary Fund to create an initial $200 million fund for the country's reconstruction.
The acting president also called on private companies to make heavy machinery available to support rescue operations.
Rodríguez urged citizens to remain calm, stay united and not leave their homes unless the buildings are deemed safe. She also announced that at 7:00 p.m. local time, a national prayer will be held nationwide, open to all religious faiths.
