Seismologist Adam Pascall explains that the difference between magnitudes 7.2 and 7.5 is much larger than it seems, because of the way the magnitude scale works...
The second of two strong seismic tremors that struck Venezuela on Wednesday was about twice as powerful as the first, according to seismologist Adam Pascall of the Australian Institute of Seismological Research.
In a statement to CNN, Pascall said that a magnitude 7.5 earthquake may not seem much bigger than a magnitude 7.2 earthquake, but in practice it is about twice as powerful due to the logarithmic nature of the magnitude scale.
"This means that the second tremor lasted significantly longer," he said.
According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), a preliminary magnitude 7.2 earthquake struck near the city of San Felipe, the capital of Yaracuy state, shortly after 6:04 p.m. local time. Just 39 seconds later, a stronger magnitude 7.5 earthquake was recorded, with an epicenter about 23 kilometers southeast of the city of Yumare, also in Yaracuy state.
According to CNN reports, at least 32 people have died and hundreds more have been injured, while authorities warn that the death toll could rise.
