Two strong earthquakes measuring 7.2 and 7.5 struck Venezuela within seconds of each other, with the USGS calling them the strongest the country has experienced since 1900.

The 7.5-magnitude earthquake that struck Venezuela is the most powerful recorded in the country in more than a century, according to data from the United States Geological Survey (USGS), cited by CNN.

According to the USGS, two strong earthquakes struck northern Venezuela just 39 seconds apart. The first tremor measured 7.2, while the second reached magnitude 7.5, classifying it as the main event of this "seismic pair."

The largest earthquake previously recorded in modern Venezuelan history occurred on October 29, 1900. Known as the San Narciso earthquake, it is estimated to have had a magnitude of 7.4 to 7.7 and caused extensive damage in Caracas and surrounding areas. Hundreds of buildings collapsed or were severely damaged, historical monuments and public buildings suffered irreversible damage, and dozens of people lost their lives. Its intensity was estimated from VIII to X on the Mercalli scale.

Experts link the high seismic activity to Venezuela's geological position, which is located on the border between the Caribbean and South American tectonic plates.

According to USGS data, the 7.5-magnitude earthquake is the second most powerful ever recorded in Venezuela, while the previous 7.2-magnitude tremor ranks among the strongest in the country's seismic history.

Residents described scenes of panic during the tremors. Some of them, who had also experienced the 1967 earthquake in Caracas, declared that the destruction was unprecedented, while another said that the images "resembled a horror movie", according to international media reports.
