Road accidents have increased in Albania, with Tirana leading by far the number of collisions during the month of May. Data published by INSTAT show a deterioration in the situation compared to the same period a year ago.

According to the report, 133 road accidents were recorded during May, up from 116 in May 2025. As a result, 181 people were killed or injured, compared to 157 in the same month last year.

The balance of the first five months of the year is also increasing. From January to May, 547 road accidents were registered, or 3.4% more than in the same period of 2025.

The most significant increase was recorded in Tirana, where the number of accidents increased from 30 to 53 during May alone. Durrës and Vlora also recorded increases, with 11 accidents each, compared to 7 a year earlier. An increase was also recorded in Elbasan, from 6 to 7 accidents, as well as in Berat, where one accident was recorded, while none were recorded a year earlier.

On the contrary, some regions have recorded a decrease in the number of accidents. Shkodra has recorded the largest decrease, from 13 to 7 accidents. There have also been decreases in Lezha (from 15 to 11), Korca (from 9 to 6) and Gjirokastër (from 8 to 5). While Fier, Dibra and Kukës have maintained almost the same level as a year ago.

According to INSTAT, 94% of accidents recorded during May were due to driver behavior. The most involved in accidents are drivers in the 25-34 age group, who account for 30.8% of the total. Likewise, Sunday is the most problematic day, with 18% of accidents, while the interval 08:00-12:00 remains the period when most collisions occur on the country's roads.
