US President Donald Trump said he will attend the upcoming NATO summit in Ankara mainly because of the respect he has for Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
Trump made it clear that if the summit were held elsewhere, he would likely not attend. Speaking to reporters at the White House, the US president described Turkey as one of NATO's most important military powers, stressing that its capabilities are often underestimated.
He mentioned the country's large reserves of military equipment, as well as its long-standing defense cooperation with the United States.
"I believe I wouldn't go if the summit wasn't held in Turkey. But I have respect for President Erdogan, so I will attend," Trump said.
According to international media reports, these comments reflect the close personal relationship between Trump and Erdogan, at a time when Turkey's strategic role and regional influence within NATO is strengthening.
The US president also hinted that he might take action that would greatly please Ankara, when asked about Turkey's request for F-35 fighter jets and jet engines, and whether he would travel there "with a big bag of gifts." The NATO summit in Ankara is scheduled to be held on July 7 and 8.
