Katia La Mar, a coastal town in the Venezuelan state of La Guaira, is among the areas hardest hit by the powerful earthquakes that rocked Venezuela. According to local media, rescue teams have encountered great difficulty in reaching some parts of the city, while damage to infrastructure has hampered search and rescue operations.

Venezuelan media describe the situation on the ground as dramatic, reporting that shelters are lacking, firefighters are overwhelmed and heavy equipment to remove rubble is insufficient. Families continue to search for their loved ones trapped under collapsed buildings, while many residents are in a state of shock.

The city is reportedly without electricity and telephone services, while roadblocks have almost completely isolated the area. Local media have also reported incidents of looting at night.

This is not the first time Katia La Mar has faced a natural disaster. In 1999, the town was hit by massive landslides and devastating floods that destroyed large parts of the area, forcing the reconstruction of many homes.

The area has also been linked to recent political developments in Venezuela. During the January 2026 US operation that led to the arrest of former President Nicolás Maduro, attacks were carried out on military targets and radar systems in the Katia La Mar area. During those strikes, a missile also hit a residential building, killing one civilian.
