At least 188 people have died and over 1,500 have been injured by two powerful earthquakes. Rescue teams continue to race against time, while the UN warns of a deep humanitarian crisis.

Venezuela is facing one of the worst natural disasters in recent years, after two powerful earthquakes with magnitudes of 7.2 and 7.5 struck the country overnight, leaving hundreds of people dead, thousands injured and tens of thousands missing.

According to the latest toll released by the president of the Venezuelan Parliament, Jorge Rodríguez, 188 deaths and 1,520 injuries have been confirmed so far. Authorities warn that the death toll is expected to rise significantly in the coming hours and days, as many people continue to be trapped under the rubble of buildings.

Nearly 37,000 people have been reported missing through a special platform created to help families search for their relatives. The list of names continues to expand, as thousands of relatives are posting photos and information in an attempt to get news of their loved ones. So far, over 1,200 people previously reported missing have been located.

In the hardest-hit areas, search and rescue teams are racing against time to pull survivors from the rubble. Operations are hampered by extensive damage to the road network, power outages, lack of communications, and damage to critical infrastructure.

The country's main international airport has suffered significant damage and is temporarily closed, while one of the runways has cracks that are being assessed by experts. Many areas lack electricity, internet and mobile phone networks, making it even more difficult to coordinate emergency operations.

In the coastal city of La Guaira, one of the worst-affected areas, thousands of residents continue to spend the night in squares, parks, schools and sports facilities adapted as emergency shelters, after their homes were damaged or declared uninhabitable.

Meanwhile, the international community is mobilizing to come to Venezuela's aid. UN Secretary-General António Guterres said the organization is "fully mobilized" and is working with local authorities and international partners to coordinate humanitarian assistance.

"A massive collective effort will be needed in the coming days to support the people of Venezuela," said the head of UN humanitarian operations, Tom Fletcher, recalling that around eight million Venezuelans were in need of humanitarian assistance even before the earthquakes.

International aid has begun to arrive. The United States has sent search and rescue teams and is mobilizing military logistical capabilities to transport aid. France has announced the deployment of 85 rescue specialists, the Netherlands has allocated 2 million euros and will send teams with search dogs and specialized equipment, while Germany, Switzerland, Spain, Chile, China and India have expressed their willingness to contribute to humanitarian operations.

Meanwhile, Pope Leo XIV has allocated 100,000 euros in emergency aid to the Catholic Church in Venezuela, while several airlines, including Iberia, have canceled flights to Caracas due to damage to the airport.

Seismological experts warn that the final toll could be much heavier. Greek seismologist Efthymios Lekkas compared the energy released by the earthquake to "180 Hiroshima atomic bombs," while professor Kostas Papazachos estimated that the number of victims could exceed 10,000 and economic damages could reach at least $4 billion.
