The United Nations Security Council is holding an emergency meeting to review the escalation of the situation in Lebanon, following the expansion of Israeli military operations and the takeover of the historic Beaufort Castle by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF).
According to diplomatic sources cited by AFP, the request for the emergency meeting was submitted by France, amid growing concerns about further destabilization of the region.
The session is taking place immediately after another emergency meeting of the Security Council, which was focused on the incident of the downing of a Russian drone over a residential building in Romania.
Tensions on the Israel-Lebanon border have risen sharply in recent days, as the Israeli army has intensified operations in southern Lebanon. Authorities in Tel Aviv have confirmed the capture of Fort Beaufort, a point of particular strategic importance, considering it a significant success in operations against the Hezbollah group.
"The capture of Beaufort Castle is an important step in operations against Hezbollah. Tensions are escalating in southern Lebanon, as the Security Council is reviewing the latest developments following the expansion of Israeli operations," diplomatic sources told AFP.
Recent developments have increased international concerns about the possibility of an escalation of the conflict in the region, while the Security Council is expected to discuss further steps to reduce tensions and avoid a wider military escalation.
