The planned attacks, also reported by the Wall Street Journal , will aim to destroy military bases used by the Soles drug cartel, which, according to the United States, is led by Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and managed by senior members of his regime.

Trump has long made no secret of his desire to put pressure on the Caracas regime, not excluding military action. Sources told the Herald that the targets, which could be hit from the air within days or even hours, are also aimed at destroying the cartel's hierarchy. US officials believe the cartel exports approximately 500 tonnes of cocaine each year, divided between Europe and the United States.

"Maduro is about to find himself trapped and may soon discover that he cannot leave the country, even if he decides to do so," one of the sources said.

According to him, "what's worse for him is that now there is more than one general ready to capture and hand him over, fully aware that it is one thing to talk about death, but another to predict it."

According to the Wall Street Journal, if President Donald Trump decides to proceed with airstrikes, it would send a clear message to Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro: it's time to go.

Although the president has not yet made a final decision on a possible ground intervention, sources have stressed that an air campaign would focus on targets considered by Washington to be essential in the links between the Maduro regime and drug trafficking networks.

Among the locations being scrutinized are military-controlled ports and airports that the United States believes are used for drug transit. One of Trump's key goals in his second term is to stem the flow of narcotics into the United States, particularly fentanyl, which is responsible for tens of thousands of deaths each year.

Washington is deploying unprecedented military power in the Caribbean. In recent days, Trump sent a missile-launching ship to Trinidad and Tobago, an island just ten miles off the coast of Venezuela, ostensibly for joint military exercises. The aircraft carrier Gerald Ford is also sailing toward South America. /Adapted from Pamphlet/
