President Donald Trump has nominated Kari Lake and Doug Mastriano, two of his allies who lost gubernatorial races in key swing states, to diplomatic posts.
The White House announced Monday that Trump has nominated Lake to be ambassador to Jamaica and Mastriano to be ambassador to Slovakia. Both nominations require Senate confirmation.
Mastriano, who ran for governor of Pennsylvania, and Lake, who lost the race in Arizona, supported Trump and his baseless election claims. Voters rejected both in 2022.
Mastriano said he looks forward to representing the United States abroad, strengthening the friendship between the two countries, and advancing the interests of the American people.
Lake, a former local television host who headed the U.S. Agency for Global Media after being appointed by Trump, said she looks forward to taking on the new role in the Caribbean.
She said that Jamaica is a country she knows well and that, if confirmed by the Senate, she will work to strengthen the partnership between the two countries and advance American interests.
Mastriano said he will continue to serve as a Pennsylvania state senator until his confirmation by the Senate. Lake's status as head of the U.S. Agency for Global Media remains unclear.
Mastriano's nomination could reportedly weaken a write-in campaign in his support in the Republican primary for governor in Pennsylvania. The campaign, which Mastriano supported but did not lead, could create obstacles for the Republican frontrunner, state Treasurer Stacy Garrity.
Lake took a job at the U.S. Agency for Global Media last year after losing two statewide races in Arizona. She lost to Gov. Katie Hobbs in 2022 and then ran in 2024 to replace former Sen. Kyrsten Sinema, but was defeated by Ruben Gallego.
After taking the role at the agency, without Senate confirmation, Lake oversaw cuts at the Voice of America as part of the federal administration's reorganization. By the end of the cuts, about 85 percent of the agency's staff had left.
However, Lake's work at the agency has faced judicial scrutiny. A federal judge ruled in March that Lake's leadership of the agency was improper because she had not been confirmed by the Senate. Later that month, the same judge ordered the Trump administration to reinstate employees who had been furloughed.
