The victims were discovered after the flames were extinguished in the building near Place De Brouckère. Six people are still missing, as authorities continue search and rescue operations.
A serious incident has shaken the center of Brussels, where several people were found dead inside an elevator after a fire broke out in the OXY Tower, a modern complex near Place De Brouckère. The news was confirmed by the Labor Division of the Public Prosecutor's Office, while Belgian authorities have not yet released the exact number of victims.
According to official information, the fire broke out on Tuesday morning on the second floor of the building, which was under construction. Initially, firefighters managed to bring the flames under control, but the fire then spread to the elevator shaft, causing a second fire inside it. After the intervention of emergency teams, this fire was also extinguished.
During the search operation, rescue teams discovered several dead people inside one of the building's elevators. Authorities have not yet released details on the identities of the victims or the exact circumstances in which they died.
The situation remains critical, as six people are still missing. According to a spokesman for the Prosecutor's Office, there is a possibility that they are in another elevator, which firefighters have not yet been able to enter due to the dangerous conditions inside the building. Search and rescue operations continue without interruption.
In addition to the fatalities, the fire also caused injuries. Two people who suffered burns were transported to the Military Hospital in Neder-over-Heembeek for specialized treatment, while a firefighter received medical attention at the scene after suffering heatstroke during the operation.
The OXY building is a multifunctional complex that includes apartments, restaurants and a rooftop bar, while part of it was still under construction. After the fire broke out, all workers on the site were immediately evacuated and settled in the staff canteen of the administrative center of the City of Brussels.
Belgian authorities activated a comprehensive emergency plan to deal with the situation. In addition to the intervention of firefighters and medical services, the Red Cross provided psychological support to workers and people affected by the event. According to the Brussels Fire Brigade, in addition to the internal emergency plan, the medical response plan and the psychosocial support plan were also activated.
The causes of the fire remain unclear. The prosecution and investigation experts have launched verifications to determine the origin of the flames and to clarify whether safety standards were respected at the construction site.
Meanwhile, authorities are expected to provide further updates in the coming hours, as search operations continue and investigations aim to fully clarify the circumstances of this tragedy, one of the most serious events recorded in the Belgian capital this year.
