The US has hit the Iranian city of Bushehr with 'shells', Iran's state news agency IRNA reports, after the country fired cruise missiles at two Saudi Arabian oil tankers in the Strait of Hormuz, killing one crew member and wounding eight others.
New explosions have been heard near two Iranian port cities, Bandar Abbas and Bushehr, Iranian state media reported. The development comes after another night of attacks between the United States and Iran, in a further escalation of tensions in the region.
Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said it had struck two United Arab Emirates tankers in the Strait of Hormuz, killing one crew member and wounding eight others, and targeted US military facilities in Jordan and Bahrain.
The United Arab Emirates condemned the attack, calling it "brazen and unacceptable." According to the country's authorities, one Indian crew member was killed and eight others were injured.
Meanwhile, the US military announced that it had completed strikes on targets it said were aimed at weakening Iran's ability to attack commercial ships. Iranian state media reported that three people were killed in the strikes.
Meanwhile, tensions have also affected international energy markets. The price of Brent crude oil has increased by more than 3%, reaching $86.07 per barrel.
The Strait of Hormuz is a key flashpoint between the US and Iran, with the two sides clashing over control of the waterway on Monday, after exchanging attacks in the region on Sunday night.
In a post on Truth Social earlier in the day, Trump said the US was re-establishing a naval blockade of Iranian ports and would impose a 20% tariff on all cargo transported through the Strait of Hormuz.
He said it would prevent “Iranian vessels or customers” from entering or leaving the main oil shipping lane, but “all other countries will have fair and open use of the Strait.” The blockade will take effect from 4 p.m. Eastern Time (8 p.m. GMT) on Tuesday.
"The United States, from this point forward, will be known as the 'GUARDIANS OF THE STRAIT OF HORMUD,' but as such, and for reasons of FAIRNESS, will be reimbursed, at a rate of 20% on all cargo transported, for any costs necessary to carry out the work of providing security in this highly volatile part of the world," he wrote.
Speaking to reporters at the White House, Trump said the US was "hitting them very hard".
"We are destroying all their offensive capability. And we are controlling the Strait," he added.
