Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has criticized US President Donald Trump's plan to impose a 20% tariff on all cargo transported through the Strait of Hormuz, stating that such a move would turn the United States into a "pirate state."
During a public event in the Brazilian state of São Paulo, Lula said that a country like the US, which has historically fought against piracy, cannot act in this way.
" A great country like the United States, which I believe has fought for a long time against piracy, cannot now become a pirate," the Brazilian president declared.
His reaction came after Trump announced on the Truth Social platform that the US would re-impose a blockade on Iranian ports and would demand a 20% tariff on all cargo passing through the Strait of Hormuz. According to Trump, this revenue would be used to fund security measures and guarantee navigation in one of the most important maritime corridors in the world.
Meanwhile, Iran's Foreign Minister, Abbas Araghchi, reacted with irony to the US president's announcement.
In a post on the X platform, he wrote that anyone who guarantees the safe passage of commercial ships through the Strait of Hormuz should be compensated for this service, adding that Iran has been and will remain the "guardian" of the strait.
"The US President is absolutely right. Whoever ensures the safe passage of commercial ships through the Strait of Hormuz should be compensated for this service. Iran has always been the guardian of the Strait and will remain so forever. However, 20% is certainly excessive. We will be fair," Araghchi wrote.
Trump's announcement has sparked international backlash and concerns about the potential impact on global trade and energy markets, as the Strait of Hormuz remains one of the most strategic routes for transporting oil and goods in the world.
