A group of local robbers smelled a golden opportunity. A quick pass from hand to hand for a much lower value than the stolen items through well-established channels that will get the loot out and the market value will increase as it passes into the hands of collectors who can ship it to the US, Russia or China where many clients are willing to pay millions of euros for a single object that no other collector has.
The Louvre robbery was not a paid job, a detective specializing in stolen works of art tells La Repubblica.
"Pay thefts, in the best cases, happen among collectors; it is very unusual for someone to seek to steal works that are kept in a museum like the Louvre."
But in what market could Napoleon's pearls be sold? How possible is that, when investigators from all over the world will be looking for them?
"As strange as it may seem, the robbery could be the act of a group that knows the place well, that may have had the support of an insider, and that certainly won't be the same one who will sell them."
More experience in this field tells us that they will wait a few days, but then, to avoid taking too many risks, they will be ready to get rid of the loot.
It should not surprise us that this could happen for a few hundred thousand euros, compared to the real value.
But in the end, stealing from a museum, even the Louvre, is less dangerous than robbing a bank or attacking an armed truck."
Finding stolen items is not impossible.
"The first few days are critical. My French colleagues know well which leads to follow, but if immediate action is not taken, they will soon be out of the country, most likely outside Europe. Some of these precious jewels can even be transported by placing them," the expert concludes.
