Iran-US talks, Pakistan PM: I hope peace deal can be finalized soon
Pakistan's Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Iran's President Masoud Pezeshkian

The prime minister of Pakistan, a country that has been a key mediator in the peace talks, and the president of Iran spoke by phone tonight to mark the Islamic holiday of Eid al-Adha.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said he hoped a peace deal between Iran and the US would “be finalized soon.” Iran’s President Masoud Pezeshkian thanked Pakistan for its mediating role and recognized Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Qatar.

The latter has recently begun to actively engage in talks by sending a team to Tehran, while Iranian negotiators were in Doha earlier this week.

Recall that Doha had mediated in the Gaza war, but not so far in the Iran war, after it was attacked by Iranian missiles.

Military analyst Michael Clarke said Qatar is currently involved in working on Tehran's demands for the release of Iranian assets frozen under international sanctions.

" As always, I think the Qataris are trying to be very helpful... and trying to find ways to meet the requirements to get things going. They're working on pretty low-level details like, 'if there's a deal, this will happen, that will happen and that will happen, '" Clarke said.
