The US president faced strong reactions from some fans at Madison Square Garden, while extraordinary security measures caused delays and restrictions for thousands of spectators.
United States President Donald Trump faced strong backlash from a large portion of the audience at New York's Madison Square Garden when his image was displayed on the arena's giant screens during the national anthem ceremony before Game 3 of the NBA Finals.
With his presence at the meeting, Trump became the first sitting president in US history to attend an NBA Finals game. The atmosphere in the arena was initially positive. Shortly before the American national anthem was played, fans chanted patriotic chants of “USA! USA!”, creating a festive atmosphere in the stadium. However, the situation changed immediately as soon as the broadcast cameras focused on Trump and his image appeared on the giant screens.
At that moment, a significant portion of the fans began to boo and express dissatisfaction with the president. The reactions lasted for several moments and only stopped when the American flag appeared on the arena screens. Then, the audience erupted in applause when the New York Knicks players were introduced.
Trump watched the game from the private box of Knicks owner James Dolan. He was accompanied by his niece, Kai Trump, personal adviser Boris Epshteyn, and several cabinet members, including administrators Lee Zeldin, Sean Duffy and Doug Burgum.
During the first half of the game, the president stood next to Dolan, while later he held talks with NBA Commissioner Adam Silver and Republican politician Bruce Blakeman, a candidate for governor.
Unprecedented security around Madison Square Garden
The president's presence brought extraordinary security measures to midtown Manhattan. The presidential helicopter Marine One took off from Trump's New Jersey residence and landed near the Wall Street area. The presidential motorcade then traveled through Manhattan to Madison Square Garden, where it arrived about an hour before the game.
Along the way, the president was confronted by several protesters who made insulting gestures towards his motorcade. Outside the arena, a group of demonstrators held signs reading “Trump Must Go.”
Since the early afternoon, the New York Police Department and the U.S. Secret Service have established a large security perimeter around the arena. Fans began forming lines more than four hours before the game began.

Federal authorities have been repeatedly reassessing Trump's security protocols after several serious incidents over the past two years. These include a shooting at a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, in 2024, the discovery of a gunman near a golf course where Trump was staying in West Palm Beach, Florida, and a recent reported armed incident at a White House Correspondents' Association event.
Asked about the president's presence in the arena, Knicks center Mitchell Robinson responded briefly:
"Okay, I believe. We go out on the court and play regardless of who's here and who's not."
Also present in the VIP stands were New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, baseball legend Derek Jeter, and former New York Giants quarterback Eli Manning.
High ticket prices drive fans away from the arena
For many fans, the biggest challenge wasn't security, but the price of tickets. The minimum price to secure a seat at Madison Square Garden exceeded $5,000, a sum higher than the average monthly rent in New York. The best seats cost tens of thousands of dollars.
Mayor Mamdani himself said he had purchased a standing-room-only ticket for about $1,000.
The high costs have led many fans to choose to watch games in bars, streets and public areas across the city.
