Saudi Arabia and Kuwait have lifted restrictions on the military use of US bases and airspace related to operations around the Strait of Hormuz, removing a key obstacle to US efforts to resume escorted commercial shipping operations through the key waterway.
The US halted Project Freedom not long after it had begun, with the operation relying heavily on Saudi and Kuwaiti bases and airspace due to the large number of US aircraft protecting the ships.
Speaking earlier this week, US defence secretary Pete Hegseth said a "powerful red, white and blue dome" had been placed over the Strait of Hormuz.
"US destroyers are on station, supported by hundreds of fighter jets, helicopters, drones and surveillance aircraft, providing 24/7 surveillance for peaceful merchant shipping ," he added.
The lifting of Saudi and Kuwaiti restrictions could also increase the range of options available to the US if Donald Trump wants to resume bombing, something he has previously promised if a deal with Iran is not reached.
