Maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz drops to zero

Over the past 48 hours, commercial ship traffic through the Strait of Hormuz has fallen to one of its lowest points ever, according to data from MarineTraffic reviewed by CNN. The public dataset shows no ships transiting between the Arabian Sea and the Persian Gulf over the past 48 hours.

Several naval vessels appear to be transiting the strait, but at least four of them are apparently broadcasting false locations either on land or on shallow sandstone cliffs where it would be extremely dangerous for cargo ships to operate.

GPS "spoofing" can also be seen off the coast of Sharjah and Dibba al-Fujairah in the United Arab Emirates, where multiple ships converge simultaneously on the same location.

It is important to note that this dataset only shows ships that are transmitting their locations; ships that are "obscured" or actively affected by GPS interference may not appear or may be misinterpreted.

In recent weeks, traffic through the Strait of Hormuz has dropped sharply as Iran's military has targeted commercial interests in the region.
