Italian Foreign Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Antonio Tajani has reacted sharply to US President Donald Trump's statements, in which the latter attacked Pope Leo XIV for his positions on Iran.
Trump previously stated that "I think he's putting a lot of Catholics and a lot of people at risk. He's totally okay with Iran having a nuclear weapon."
In response, Tajani stressed that such attacks do not help maintain stability and peace.
"Attacks against the Holy Father, the head and spiritual leader of the Catholic Church, are neither acceptable nor beneficial to the cause of peace," he said.
He also expressed full support for the Pope's positions, describing them as a function of dialogue and universal values.
"I reiterate my support for every action and word of Pope Leo; his testimonies are in favor of dialogue, the value of human life and freedom," Tajani declared.
According to him, this is also the position of the Italian government, which aims to contribute to stability through diplomacy.
"This is a vision shared by our government, committed through diplomacy to ensuring stability and peace in all areas of conflict," Tajani added.
