The Pentagon has denied reports of Iran's use of so-called "killer dolphins," reacting with tones that veer between seriousness and irony to these claims.

During a press conference, US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth was asked about reports suggesting that Tehran might use explosive-laden marine mammals against US ships. “I can’t confirm or deny whether we have killer dolphins, but I can confirm that they don’t,” he said.

Even the Chief of the General Staff, Dan Caine, dismissed these claims, saying he had never heard of such a program and comparing it to "laser-beam sharks."

The reports, first published by the Wall Street Journal citing Iranian officials, suggested that Iran could use new weapons against US warships, including submarines and other unconventional assets.

Some international and American media outlets have covered these claims, while some Iranian media outlets have described them as unusual. On social media, an Iranian representative office abroad also published an artificial intelligence-generated image of a dolphin with explosives, in a reaction that was interpreted as satirical.

However, US authorities confirm that Iranian attacks on US targets have increased. According to the Pentagon, Iran has struck US units more than ten times since the start of the current ceasefire, but without crossing the threshold that would lead to the resumption of large-scale military operations.

Meanwhile, tensions in the Strait of Hormuz remain high, keeping the region under constant international attention.
