Former Greek Prime Minister introduces new party "ELAS", aims to unite the left...
Alexis Tsipras has made a strong return to the Greek political scene with the creation of a new party: the “ Greek Left Alliance .” A political project that aims to unite the radical left, social democracy, and political ecology into a single progressive force.
At an event held in Thiseio, Athens, the former Greek prime minister presented the name and founding statement of the new party, speaking of the "beginning of a new collective effort" and the need for Greece to experience "a shock of honesty and democracy."
" The big day has come. The wait is over ," Tsipras declared at the start of his speech.
" Today we take the first step for the vast social majority to have a voice again. Today a new political force is born with the aim not only of political change, but of changing politics itself ," he said.

Tsipras described ELAS as the “ruling left of the new era,” speaking of the union of “the three historical currents of the progressive camp”: the radical left, social democracy, and political ecology.
" Our declaration marks the launch of a great progressive alliance. This is the governing left of the new era ," he said.
He also spoke of a "new patriotism" linked to social justice and democracy.
" We don't just need political change, but a change of policy ," Tsipras said.
His speech also included attacks on the conservative government of Kyriakos Mitsotakis, as well as on PASOK, while Tsipras tried to present himself as the only real alternative to the progressive Greek camp.
He criticized the war in Ukraine, the Israeli offensive in Gaza, and attacks in the Middle East, declaring: "We will not remain silent as bodies fall in Ukraine. We will not remain silent in the face of the genocide of Palestinians in Gaza."
Tsipras also spoke about economic uncertainty, the labor market and the social crisis, saying that "people's lives have turned into a perpetual race without stability and without real security."

The creation of ELAS immediately shook the Greek political scene.
The government's initial reaction was harsh. Government sources mocked Tsipras's return, stating that " after so much advertising and communication, he appeared again as unchanged and unrepentant ."
" Society seeks to move forward faster, while Tsipras, from the party name to the unfulfilled promises and toxic rhetoric, seeks to set Greece back decades ," government sources told Greek media.
But the biggest concern seems to exist within the left itself. Tsipras's move has created tension and uncertainty within SYRIZA, the party he himself once brought to power and which is now in the throes of an identity crisis and electoral decline.
ELAS could attract voters, political figures, and activists from SYRIZA, PASOK, and other progressive groups, reformatting the entire Greek left camp.
Tsipras himself made an open call for broad political and social unity. “ We call on every Greek, both at home and abroad, to be part of this effort ,” he declared. /Pamphlet
