US Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that a deal with Iran is still possible, despite recent tensions and attacks carried out by the US on Iranian targets in the south of the country.
Rubio's comments come after US Central Command announced that US forces struck a missile launch site and Iranian ships that, according to Washington, were attempting to lay naval mines.
According to American authorities, the operation was carried out in "self-defense."
"A deal with Iran is still possible," declared Marco Rubio.
The focus of tensions remains the Strait of Hormuz, one of the most strategic corridors for global oil transport. Rubio stressed that this sea route "will be opened, one way or another."
Meanwhile, strong warnings have come from Tehran about a response to any further American attack.
"Our response will extend beyond the region," said Iranian Armed Forces spokesman Shakarchi.
Tensions between the US and Iran have increased significantly in recent days, while the international community is following developments in the region with concern.
