In November 2024, Donald Trump won 95.9 percent of the vote in Grant County, Nebraska. It was the highest percentage in the entire United States. Even as gas prices are rising and the cost of living is higher, residents of this rural community continue to support the American president.
"Trump is doing the most amazing job any president has done since Ronald Reagan!" says Ellen White, a 78-year-old retiree who has lived most of her life in this county, often called the "most Trumpist" in America.
Grant County is located in the Sandhills of western Nebraska, an isolated region of vast grasslands and ancient grass-covered dunes. The community is very small and scattered in remote areas.
The nearest large city is Denver, about 270 miles (434 km) away. According to the 2020 census, only 561 people live here. The area is mainly supported by livestock and cattle ranches.
There is only one restaurant, open Wednesday through Sunday, and the nearest doctor is about 70 miles away. The few stores are mostly located in Hyannis, the county seat. However, the lockdown does not seem to have weakened residents' emotional connection to Trump.
On the contrary. Heidi Merrihew, 64, a curator at the Grant County Museum, describes the president as “a good family man and a believer.” “That’s what makes people trust him. People want to know that he’s a good man after all. He takes care of the American family and his own family, and that’s the most important thing,” she adds.
Trump's support continues even as gas prices have risen sharply since the start of the Iran war in February. Merrihew says he used to fill up his Ford F-150 pickup truck for $50-75, but now it costs him over $100.
However, she doesn't blame the president. "I don't know who to blame for this. I think the problem is our economy. It's sad that we pay so much, but I think he's doing a good job..." the woman insists.

Ford mbështet gjithashtu qëndrimin e ashpër të Trump ndaj Iranit, edhe pse kjo ka sjellë rritje të kostos së jetesës për shkak të çmimeve të karburantit.
Ai ka shërbyer në Korpusin e Marinës amerikane gjatë krizës së pengjeve në Iran në vitin 1980 dhe e sheh Teheranin si një kërcënim të vjetër. “Nëse dikush do të ishte marrë me Iranin shumë kohë më parë, sot nuk do të ishim në këtë situatë”- shprehet ai. Për Ellen White, problemi nuk është Trump por kompanitë e naftës.“Shumë njerëz duan ta fajësojnë presidentin për gjithçka, por ai nuk e drejton vendin i vetëm. Ai po përpiqet ta bëjë vendin tonë më të sigurt dhe më të mirë”- deklaron gruaja.
Ajo beson se njerëzit e Grant County ndajnë të njëjtat vlera me Trump: të punuarit fort, patriotizmin dhe traditën konservatore. “Trump është një biznesmen i jashtëzakonshëm dhe i zgjuar. Nuk ka frikë të rrezikojë dhe t’i bëjë gjërat që duhen. Ai po e bën këtë sepse është patriot amerikan. Edhe unë jam e tillë”- përfundoi White.
Krahasimi i pashmangshëm me Shqipërinë
Ajo që ndodh në këtë qytezë të Nebraskës nuk është thjesht një fenomen amerikan. Fanatizmi politik, besnikëria pothuajse e pakushtëzuar ndaj një lideri dhe justifikimi i çdo vendimi të tij, shfaqen në forma të ndryshme edhe në vende të tjera, përfshirë Shqipërinë.
Për dekada me radhë, shqiptarët jetuan nën kultin e Enver Hoxhës, ku udhëheqësi paraqitej si i pagabueshëm dhe çdo kritikë ndaj tij konsiderohej tradhti. Parulla e njohur “Bar do hamë, por parimet nuk i shkelim”, u bë simbol i një besnikërie të verbër, ku sakrifica ekonomike dhe izolimi justifikoheshin në emër të ideologjisë dhe udhëheqësit.
Edhe pas vdekjes së Hoxhës, Ramiz Alia trashëgoi një pjesë të këtij mentaliteti politik, ku partia dhe lideri vendoseshin mbi realitetin ekonomik dhe interesin e qytetarëve. Në forma të ndryshme, ky model shihet ende sot.
Rizgjedhja së fundmi e Sali Berishës në krye të Partisë Demokratike, në një garë të konsideruar nga shumë si joserioze dhe pa konkurrencë reale, tregoi se kultura e “liderit të përjetshëm” mbetet ende e fortë në politikën shqiptare.

In the other camp, Edi Rama is heading into 16 years at the helm of the country, becoming the most dominant figure in transitional politics. During this period, over a third of Albanians have abandoned the country, considering this a failure of the governing model.
There is also an extreme deepening of economic inequality and an economy where the influence of organized crime and money laundering is often mentioned. Yet his militant socialist base continues to unwaveringly defend every decision of the government.
And despite the historical and ideological differences between Trump's rural America and post-communist Albania, the psychological mechanism seems similar: when politics turns into an emotional identity and the leader into an almost symbolic figure, supporters no longer judge reality, but defend his figure at all costs./ Pamphlet
