A scandal breaks out in Scotland over a coffee machine and salt set... in
Peter Murrell

Jaguars, Montblanc pens, luxury watches, iPads and even a €3,000 salt and pepper set. This is how, according to Scottish prosecutors, Nicola Sturgeon's ex-husband spent the money of the Scottish Nationalist Party.

Peter Murrell, the former leader of the Scottish National Party (SNP) and for years one of the most powerful men in Scottish politics, admitted in court that he had embezzled over 400,000 pounds from the funds of the party he himself led.

The luxury list included: a luxury motorhome worth around 150,000 euros; a Jaguar car; PlayStation and iPad; Montblanc pens; and a salt and pepper set worth 3,000 euros.

British media report that the full shopping list runs to 119 pages.

Murrell, who together with Nicola Sturgeon formed the "royal couple" of Scottish politics for years, now risks a long prison sentence.

Meanwhile, Nicola Sturgeon, the former prime minister who for years built the image of a progressive and incorruptible politician, insists that she knew nothing about what her husband, from whom she has now separated, was doing.

According to her, the two had separate bank accounts.

But the Scottish opposition finds it implausible that a man earning just over £100,000 a year could finance such a luxurious lifestyle without anyone at home noticing.

The scandal erupted in April three years ago, when Murrell was arrested at the apartment he shared with Sturgeon.

The luxury motorhome, parked in front of his mother's house, was seized by police and became the symbol of the affair that shook Scottish politics.

Two months later, Nicola Sturgeon herself was arrested, although she was later acquitted of the charges.

Her resignation in February 2023 was officially linked to political failures, from Scottish independence to debates over gender policies.

But suspicion persists in Britain that she may have realized the investigation was approaching and decided to leave before the scandal erupted.

And it is precisely here that the story becomes almost ironic for the Albanian public.

In Scotland, politics, media and public opinion are shaken by 400 thousand pounds.

Meanwhile, in Albania, corruption has become so normal that the news is no longer when millions disappear, but when someone "small" is caught.

In Tirana, a cleaning lady became a national symbol because 500 thousand euros were found in her house. A cleaning lady.

Meanwhile, for years, Albanians have been hearing about tenders worth millions, concessions, affairs, villas, incinerators, roads, and staggering wealth related to power, and almost no one is shocked anymore.

In Scotland, a coffee machine and a Jaguar bring down political careers. In Albania, millions have become so commonplace that scandals only last a few days, then the country moves on as if nothing had happened. / Pamphlet
