The Russian president is backing a series of scientific projects to slow aging and replace organs, but experts are questioning their results and scientific basis...
Vladimir Putin has invested billions of rubles in ambitious experiments to extend human life, but critics question whether these so-called scientific projects are truly based on real results.
Putin, 73, has allocated at least $26 billion for state research that includes the development of gene therapy drugs aimed at slowing down cell aging. These projects are being developed under a program called "New Technologies for Health Care," The Wall Street Journal reported.
This drug, according to Russian Deputy Science Minister Denis Sekirinsky, “represents one of the most promising avenues in the fight against aging.” However, it is just one of many longevity projects that Putin has promoted over the decades, in an obsession that seems to have begun when he was just 16 years old.
Among other initiatives it has supported is growing human organs inside pigs for later transplantation into humans, a procedure known as xenotransplantation. Russia is also investing in bioprinting, a technology that uses 3D printers to create living biological tissues.
State-funded Russian scientists claim to have successfully printed a mouse thyroid gland and human cartilage. They also say they aim to produce complete human organs for transplantation by the end of this decade.

These projects are not being developed in secret. Putin himself publicly presented them in April 2024 and stated that such technologies could save 175,000 lives by 2030.
“A whole range of scientific programs in this area are being developed in the Russian Federation,” the Kremlin told The Wall Street Journal, adding that “these projects are supported by the state and many scientific and research institutions participate in them.”
One of the key figures in this initiative is Putin's daughter, Maria Vorontsova, 41, an endocrinologist who heads state projects in the field of genetics. Also playing a central role has been the renowned Russian physicist Mikhail Kovalchuk, brother of financier Yuri Kovalchuk, one of Putin's closest associates.
"It's difficult to talk about immortality, but the ability to repair the human organism will undoubtedly increase," Kovalchuk told Russian media, arguing that humanity will soon be able to replace and repair organs on a continuous basis.
However, critics point out that very little peer-reviewed research has been published so far. They argue that some researchers may be more interested in pleasing Russia's most powerful leader than presenting objective results.
"If there are no scientific publications, then there are no real results. Their statements should be seen as aspirations, not to say dreams," said Alexander Ostrovskiy, a Russian bioprinting pioneer who fled Russia after the invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
"It's impossible to do science in isolation. It's very likely they're telling Putin what he wants to hear to secure funding," he added.
Another important figure in this project was Vladimir Khavinson, one of Russia's most renowned doctors, who died in 2024. According to The Wall Street Journal, he had stated that one of his greatest ambitions was to extend Putin's life. Another goal was to increase the human lifespan to 120 years.
Putin's obsession with health has long been apparent in public.

Photos of the Russian president shirtless, riding horses, motorcycles, hunting or fishing, have become so popular that they have become internet memes.
He has spoken about his longevity plans with other world leaders. In 2025, an open mic recorded him telling Chinese President Xi Jinping that organ replacement could allow people to live forever. And in 2018, he reportedly raved to Austrian Chancellor Sebastian Kurz about the benefits of staying naked in a cryotherapy chamber at extremely low temperatures.
According to the report, this interest may have begun in 1968, when the Soviet film "Dead Season" was released. The film told the story of CIA agents collaborating with Nazi doctors to control humanity through medical experiments.
Putin has stated that the film deeply influenced him and that it was one of the reasons that led him to join the KGB in 1975.
However, his efforts to promote the image of a strong and healthy leader may have had the opposite effect. For years, conspiracy theories about his health have dogged him.
In numerous videos in recent years, the Russian president has been seen with visibly shaking hands and feet. Meanwhile, social media users and various commentators have analyzed the changes in his facial appearance to speculate that he may be seriously ill, close to death or even already replaced by a so-called sozi to deceive Russian public opinion. /Adapted from Pamphlet /
