The Louvre Museum in Paris has reopened, three days after thieves stole historic royal jewels worth an estimated €90 million, The Guardian reports .

The financial loss from France's most dramatic heist in decades has been estimated at nearly 90 million euros, as the director of the Louvre prepared to face tough questions about how thieves managed to steal priceless jewels in broad daylight.

Live footage broadcast by Reuters showed visitors passing through the museum's entrance gates for the first time since the theft, which made headlines around the world.

The event was a major blow to France's cultural heritage, as the jewels belonged to Napoleon and the French Empress.

The museum's president and director, Laurence des Cars, is expected to answer questions from the senate's culture committee on Wednesday afternoon, three days after the seven-minute robbery targeting France's crown jewels.

A gang of four thieves broke into the Louvre's Apollo gallery shortly after the museum opened on Sunday morning, using a ladder from a furniture crane on the street below and making off with eight pieces of Napoleon's jewels.

It is not clear whether the museum, which was closed immediately after the robbery and remained closed on Monday and Tuesday, has reopened today.

Des Cars is expected to answer questions about the speed with which the thieves managed to break a first-floor window, the quality of the display cases holding the jewelry, and the apparent lack of a rapid response unit to thwart the robbers.
