"A number of buildings have collapsed. Some houses have been reduced to rubble," said Robert Duggan, a police officer in the city of General Santos, one of the areas hardest hit by the quake. According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the earthquake was registered at a magnitude of 7.8 at a depth of about 35 kilometers.
The magnitude was initially estimated at 8.1, but was later revised by seismological experts. The epicenter was located about 56 kilometers south of the city of General Santos, in the Mindanao region, where the tremors were felt strongly over a wide area of the Philippine archipelago.
Following the earthquake, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center (PTWC) immediately issued a tsunami warning, warning that large waves could hit the coasts of the Philippines, Indonesia, Taiwan and Japan within hours. According to estimates, tsunami waves could reach heights of 1 to 3 meters in the Philippines, while waves of 0.3 to 1 meter are expected in Indonesia and Malaysia. The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) also activated warnings along the coastline from Okinawa to east of Tokyo, warning that waves could reach up to one meter in height.
Images posted on social media showed panicked residents and buildings collapsing as the powerful tremors shook the area, as thousands of people fled to safer areas. The Philippines is located on the Pacific Ring of Fire, one of the world's most active seismic and volcanic zones, where strong earthquakes and volcanic activity are common. Philippine authorities and international monitoring agencies are closely monitoring the situation, with further updates expected on the extent of the damage and aftershocks.
