100 million euros in debt and lawsuits, the predicted failure of "Air

From national pride to financial collapse, the end of Air Albania has international repercussions

The bankruptcy of "Air Albania" has caused a stir in the international arena, being reported by specialized media such as the German portal " Aero Telegraph" , known for its analysis of the global aviation sector.

According to this report, the failure of Air Albania is not simply a local crisis, but a strong signal for the failure of improvised models of "national" airlines, which are created without transparency, without competition and without real financial support.

In recent months, the company has faced a series of lawsuits in international courts over non-payment of leased aircraft and other services. Flights have been drastically reduced, while many announced routes have been closed without warning, disappointing passengers and deepening operational chaos.

German media points out that Air Albania emerged from the scene with a debt estimated at over 100 million euros and with only one active aircraft at its end, while strategic partner Turkish Airlines withdrew from cooperation.

In the international perspective, the case of Air Albania is serving as a "case study" on how airline projects with political support, but without a market strategy, end in collapse and at high cost to the state and citizens.

Establishing an airline in Albania seems like an impossible mission. In the last two decades alone, six companies have suspended operations: Ada Air, Belle Air, Albawings, Albatros Air, Albanian Airlines, and most recently, Air Albania. This early December, the Civil Aviation Authority revoked the operating license of the “national company,” leaving behind yet another scandal of disappointed passengers, unpaid employees, and staggering debts.

A political project with wind from the Bosphorus

In May 2017, Prime Minister Edi Rama and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced the establishment of an Albanian airline, with the support of Turkish Airlines. The company would operate as a public-private venture, based at Tirana Airport, with the aim of boosting Albania's growing tourism and strengthening strategic ties between the two countries.

But from the start, the project was accompanied by controversy. The shares were divided without any public competition: Turkish Airlines received 49%, Albcontrol 10%, while an unknown Albanian company created specifically for this, MDN Investment, received 41%. The first flight was carried out in July 2018 with an Airbus A319 leased from Turkish Airlines on the Tirana-Istanbul route.

Flights with 10 passengers and ruthless competition

Although the project initially seemed promising, the situation changed with the aggressive entry of low-cost companies such as Wizz Air and Ryanair. These giants shook up the Albanian market with prices that were unaffordable for Air Albania.

In an attempt to revive itself, in the spring of 2025, the company announced the resumption of operations to 11 new destinations, including Vienna, by leasing aircraft from Fly 2 Sky and Sky Up. But the reality was shocking: on February 20, 2025, the inaugural flight to Vienna took place with only 10 passengers on board, while competitors Ryanair, Wizz Air and Austrian Airlines fought for every seat on that route. After just three flights, this route was suspended, like many others.

Million-dollar debt, international lawsuit and the departure of the Turkish partner

In recent months, Air Albania has faced lawsuits in international courts for non-payment of aircraft leases and other services such as catering. Turkish Airlines announced in November that it would withdraw from the partnership and terminate cooperation on the Tirana-Istanbul route. This signaled the inevitable end.

The company's debts are estimated at over 100 million euros, while operations were reduced to a minimum, with only one leased aircraft operating flights to Milan and Istanbul.

On December 2, with the landing of flight ZB1003 from Istanbul, the story of Air Albania officially ended, a story built on political ambition, dubious management and a lack of transparency. /Pamphlet
