The world seems to be falling further and further into the crisis of war, with daily images of conflict, destruction and insecurity arriving from every corner of the planet. But there are still countries that manage to maintain a calm and peaceful climate, both for their residents and for visitors. According to the Global Peace Index, the number of countries maintaining an overall peaceful image for 2026 is only 99, marking the 12th consecutive year of decline in the global score.

The index examines 163 countries based on 23 criteria, including military spending and ongoing conflict, as well as homicide rates and perceptions of safety. The best-performing regions typically combine low levels of violence, well-functioning institutions, high social trust, good relations with neighbors and a high quality of life.

What are the top five places on the list?

1. Iceland

This is the 19th consecutive year that the Nordic country has topped the Global Index. A sense of security and tranquility, combined with reduced conflict and low levels of militarization, contribute to this rating. At the same time, effective public services, a sense of equality promoted by the country's top officials, and the use of renewable energy sources also play an important role.

2. New Zealand

The main advantage of this country in the South Pacific is the widespread sense of security among its inhabitants. It is the country with the least conflicts in the region, which is mainly due to the reduction in arms imports, while the fact that it is located far enough from other countries helps to avoid geopolitical tensions. At the same time, what is emphasized is the mentality of the inhabitants who have a sense of calm in their daily lives, while the small population of the country contributes to security. Residents tend to be careful and trust each other, and unrest is not an issue of daily life.

3. Switzerland

It is a country with a permanent system of neutrality in terms of involvement in international conflicts and a low crime rate within it. Many different ethnic communities live in harmony with each other, with four officially spoken languages. In addition, Switzerland also has one of the best work systems, which helps maintain balance with everyday life.

4. Slovenia

The Eastern European country enters the top five for the first time. This is largely due to the country's safety, with extremely low crime and militarization. In addition, the rich natural landscape encourages residents to spend a lot of time outdoors, cycling, hiking and skiing during the winter months.

5. Ireland

Another country on the list that has a very low crime rate, while having little involvement in international conflicts. Ireland's intense past has helped its residents eliminate prejudices among themselves, while the sense of hospitality is deeply rooted in them.
