The first trial session on the merits of the case against the mayor of Tirana, Erion Veliaj, as well as the other defendants in the case who have chosen to be tried under ordinary procedure, began this Wednesday at the Special Court Against Corruption and Organized Crime (SCOC).
During the hearing, Veliaj announced in a statement that he would not be present in the courtroom.
"I will not be present because SPAK has not implemented the Court's decision to hand over the missing files and digital evidence and to enable me to participate as a free man in the courtroom. I request to be represented by lawyer Plarent Ndreca," Veliaj declared.
The mayor has previously raised concerns about access to investigative materials, claiming that not all the files were made available to him. He has also objected to the manner of his appearance in the courtroom, describing his being held in a glass cage as illegal and discriminatory.
The hearing is expected to continue with the consideration of procedural issues and the presentation of positions by the parties to the process.
