The first trial session on the merits against the mayor of Tirana, Erion Veliaj, as well as other defendants in the same case who have chosen to be tried under ordinary procedure, is expected to take place today at the Special Court Against Corruption and Organized Crime (SCOC).
The last hearing, held on June 10, was postponed due to the absence of several defense lawyers. Veliaj was also absent from that hearing, justifying his non-appearance by placing him in a glass cage. The mayor has described this measure as illegal, unconstitutional and discriminatory.
During the last session, the trial panel asked the prosecutor in the case, Ols Dado, to make thousands of more pages of documents available to Veliaj, in the detention facilities. The mayor has repeatedly claimed that not all the investigative acts in the file have been handed over to him.
Another request of Veliaj, which continues to be rejected by the court, is the live broadcast of court hearings. His lawyer, Plarent Ndreca, told the media that he has addressed the High Judicial Council with a request to declare Article 14 of an instruction of this institution invalid. According to him, this article is being used by the courts to limit transparency and to prevent the broadcast of hearings.
