A Russian artist known for his criticism of Russian President Vladimir Putin has been shot dead in the city of Biała Podlaska, in eastern Poland.

The Lublin regional prosecutor's office announced on June 16 that the victim was shot five times, including once in the head. Prosecutor's office spokesman Marcin Kozak told a news conference that two Belarusian citizens had been arrested in connection with the case, but no charges had yet been filed against them.

Local media identified the victim as Robert Kuzofkov, also known by his stage name Semion Skremecki. He was a Russian artist and performer known for his critical stances towards the Russian leadership.

Kozak confirmed that the deceased, whom prosecutors identified as Robert K., carried out artistic activities in which he expressed criticism of the current policies and actions of the Russian authorities.

According to the Meduza news agency, three days before his murder, Skremecki had traveled to Berlin to mark Russia Day on June 12, one of the country's most important national holidays. During the event, he organized a protest where he displayed a caricature of Joseph Stalin and Vladimir Putin.

Polish authorities are continuing investigations to determine the motives and circumstances of the crime.
