United States President Donald Trump has openly expressed his dissatisfaction with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, stating that he must show more responsibility for the situation in Lebanon.
Speaking to reporters during the G7 summit, Trump hinted that the Israeli government's actions have complicated American efforts to reach a deal with Iran, particularly due to tensions related to Hezbollah in Lebanon.
Asked if he was frustrated with Netanyahu, the US president replied: "Without me, there would be no Israel because no other president was willing to do what I did."
Trump also recalled his close relationship with the Israeli prime minister, but stressed that he expects a more cautious approach from him.
"I had a great relationship with Bibi, but now Bibi needs to be more responsible with regard to Lebanon," Trump declared, using the nickname by which Netanyahu is widely known.
Trump reportedly believes that Israeli attacks on Hezbollah have hampered US diplomatic efforts with Iran. Tehran has insisted that any ceasefire agreement must also include the situation in Lebanon.
Netanyahu, on the other hand, has tried to avoid a public clash with the US president. Commenting on the US-Iran deal, he stated: "There are times when President Trump and I disagree. ... I am responsible for Israel's security interests and this must be done wisely."
Recent statements show that, despite the strong alliance between the US and Israel, there are differences in the approach to recent developments in the Middle East and the way the conflict in Lebanon is being managed.
